About this pastoral study project

This project will coincide with a jubilee year within the local church, during which time Bible study, worship, and play will take precedence over typical institutional activities. This churchwide sabbath will be planned for renewal and revitalization within the life of the congregation. A connection between the church’s sabbatical year and the pastor’s sabbatical study project will also be emphasized. The heart of the project will be a week-long theological and artistic thinktank utilizing a diverse group of theologians and artists. Four individuals with theological and biblical expertise (e.g., pastors and college/seminary professors) will be brought together with four individuals with artistic and storytelling experience (e.g., comic book artists and writers) in intentional community. The first part of the collaborative experience will be spent clearly identifying the underlying biblical story we want to re-imagine and re-frame for the popular culture. The second, and more intensive, part of the week will be focused on brainstorming possible storylines for a graphic novel. At the conclusion of the weeklong thinktank, all of the resultant material will then be consolidated into a collaborative online document for further work. Once there is consensus among group participants on a creative direction, writing and art for the project will begin.
