About this pastoral study project

A deep untapped vitality for the church lies in being able to bridge the margins and mainstream. Both groups possess fear and shame, distrust and misperceptions. Even though we can feel more connected in our age of mobile technology, we are still largely distant from one another. I believe improv is a tool for mutual transformation. In my project I plan to explore how improv can enable both marginal and mainstream people to learn new ways of being – not just in their heads, but more importantly, viscerally – in their bodies. This new way of being will help create a greater potential for the margins and the mainstream to be bridged. My plan is to study improv via texts, consulting with people in the field, and participating in improv classes. Additionally, the crux of the project will be to collaborate and consult with a local improv theatre director and lead classes for groups of people from the margins; classes with mainstream church groups; and classes joining the two groups. I will interview participants before and after to see the impact of improv. And I will share my findings via a blog with the wider church and society.
