About this pastoral study project

I propose to develop a vision and framework for congregations to consider as they – with urgency and hope – seek to embrace their vocation as a “public church.” I will approach this question from the particularities of the Reformed tradition and a metropolitan setting, but the scope will not be limited geographically or denominationally. I believe that any congregation can experience revitalization and transformation as it sets its vision beyond its walls to serve as an active presence and voice in its broader community. More importantly, our fractured communities hunger for the justice-seeking and reconciling witness a public church can offer.

I will visit four to six diverse congregations across the country that embrace the values and practices of “public church.” The visits will include attendance of congregational worship and other gatherings. I will interview pastors, key staff, and active church members. I will do a thorough review of each congregation’s print and online resources and its social media presence.

This on-site research will be anchored in a thorough literature review, first by establishing a foundational definition of “public church.” My literature review will include appropriate historical and theological survey as well as current scholarship, particularly that which explores the intersection of religion and culture. The proposal will build in writing time at the conclusion, to give me ample focus for aggregating my visit results and connecting the findings of the literature review to the “on-the-ground” experiences.
