About this pastoral study project

Research will include existing government, non-profit and media literature and online data resources to determine: the magnitude and forms of trafficking in the U.S.; populations most at risk; specific responses available and that can and need to be created; and best practices and benchmarks. Interviews will be conducted of both survivors and leaders engaged in anti-trafficking work. A survey will be taken of churches within the Texas Annual Conference UMC to determine their basis and level of involvement with human-trafficking ministries. Research will also include biblical narratives and theological studies that support engagement in eliminating this practice from the earth and reaching out to victims, as well as those who engage in this practice, to offer paths of healing and redemption. Theological research will further include the sacredness of bodies and how that informs prophetic witness in this context. From this research, I will develop curriculum and other resources for educating congregations and other communities about the reality of human trafficking in the U.S., the theological basis for engagement, and specific and multiple tools and opportunities for doing so.
