About this pastoral study project

The International church in Europe has been a place of welcome and hospitality to immigrants in Europe for over 40 years. Here in the US, we continue to struggle as a church to understand how to bridge the racial and culture divides that our multi-ethnic society continues to reflect. My project would draw upon the stories of immigrants in Europe who have found a place of welcome and growth in an international church with the hope that we could learn something from these communities and grow in our ability to welcome the outsider, create harmony between people and honor the Biblical mandate to welcome the stranger. My experience of pastoring in an International church in Stockholm, Sweden for 16.5 years along with a year in London, England has sparked an interest in discovering how the diversity, unity, and understanding that emerged in our churches in Europe could be repeated here in the US church. Instead of being communities of conflict and misunderstanding, International churches in Europe model how to celebrate diversity, learning from one another and embracing one another while allowing for each culture to maintain its own flavor and identity. Attention to how a dominant culture can either seek to welcome others through a true integrated model rather than an oppressing assimilation model would also be a key component in understanding how the US church can grow in the area of doing a better job at welcoming the immigrant into their established communities.
