About this pastoral study project

Pastors and lay leaders wanting to strengthen their congregation’s community ministry have a great resource in congregational studies research. Unfortunately, many of these works remain inaccessible to the working pastor or busy lay leader, whether due to their length, their use of statistical measures, or their use of academic terminology as required for scholarly publication. The project involves reading the most important works in congregational studies over the past ten years, summarizing the work in written form and presenting the results to a group of clergy and lay leaders, many of whom have already attended a one-day seminar on equipping congregations to do public ministry. At lunch meetings in Rochester, Syracuse and New York City, participants will be asked about their congregation’s involvement in community outreach and about gaps in their knowledge. They will be asked to bring photos illustrating the challenge and promise of their work and to share stories highlighting their experiences. The resulting photos, vignettes and case studies will be shared on the website of Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School and a new website being developed for the Congregational Studies Team based at Hartford Theological Seminary.
