About this first book grant for scholars of color

This project analyzes the development of central Christian claims about God's providence, incarnation, and redemption and shows how various key thinkers use monetary metaphors and concepts to structure their claims about God. I show how this inserts a monetary logic into aspects of Christian thought, how it offers a sacred aura to money, and how it enables the theological legitimation of economic practices in the West and in North America, in particular. Thus, I demonstrate how the ransom theory of salvation, wherein God uses monetary transaction to free humanity and conquer the devil, becomes useful in prosperity teachings to assure disadvantaged believers, particularly from minority communities, that spiritual victory can come from economic exchanges. God's economic victory over Satan is a model for Christian victory over spiritual oppression through their use of monetary resources. I also show how the idea of God as a wise and prudent cosmic economist leads to the exaltation of economic management practices in Christian tradition. This helps to explain the attraction of corporate America for many American churches, for to be astute and successful with money signals imitation of the divine steward. Finally, I explore how American constructive theology should reckon with the inheritance of monetary-economic concepts in Christian tradition before it presumes to critique the economy from a supposedly pure space. The American church and American theology must learn to speak from the perilous reality of a thorough meshing with and permeation by the logic of money and economy as they articulate visions of social and spiritual transformation.
