About this first book grant for scholars of color

Catholic parishes in the United States are changing fast. Not long ago, most parishes served primarily Euro-American, English-speaking parishioners. Today less than two thirds do so. Nearly 4,500 parishes serve Hispanics; approximately 1,000 serve African-American and Black immigrants; hundreds more serve Asian-American and Pacific Islanders; a small, yet significant number serve Native-Americans. Most times these diverse groups coincide in the same parishes, sharing not only space, but also the experience of worshiping and building communities together. Moments of hope and tension shape everyday life in these communities. Brave New Parish: Cultural Diversity and Paradigm Shifts in Catholic Congregations (working title) addresses the emergence, challenges, and contributions of “shared” or “multicultural” parishes, approximately forty percent of all Catholic parishes in the country –and rising. The project explores the next stage in the evolution of U.S. Catholic parishes and how these communities are transforming the overall American Catholic experience “from below.” The goal is to provide a valuable framework for scholars, students, and Church leaders to better analyze the American Catholic experience today. The project will be significantly informed by data collected through the first ever National Study of Catholic Parishes with Hispanic Ministry for which I served as the principal investigator.
