About this dissertation fellowship

"Sensus Homosexualitatis: Exploring Sensus Fidelium Through an Examination of Pastoral Care for Catholic Sexual Minorities" examines the reception of official Catholic teachings on homosexuality in the United States. This dissertation begins with an exposition of promulgated doctrines. It then proceeds to a discussion of different ecclesial models, one of which notes that the Holy Spirit is present and active in the lives of all of the faithful, not just the hierarchy, and thus encourages solicitation of perspectives from all levels of the Church. After outlining the teachings and offering a justification for gauging the reception of doctrines at all levels of the Church, the project turns to a presentation of the data gathered through surveys and interviews completed by Catholic pastors, ministry leaders, and parishioners, as well as observations of ministry group gatherings. The project concludes with an analysis of ethical and pastoral implications of the present teachings on ecclesial life, and an argument in favor of retaining or developing present teachings on pastoral care for sexual minorities. The argument will be based in part on the perspectives of over 100 U.S. Catholics who have agreed to take part in the study.
